With age or rapid weight loss, the upper arms naturally become loose and flabby, leading to self-consciousness and limiting a person’s available wardrobe choices. Many people focus on losing weight and toning arm muscles to reduce sagging, but – while these are healthy ways to approach the problem – skin often doesn’t easily bounce back after a certain age. Brachioplasty presents an effective solution. Brachioplasty simply removes the excess fat from the upper arm and tightens the skin to give your arm a leaner, cleaner, more attractive appearance.

This is how brachioplasty works:

A T-shaped incision is made near the elbow extending down the upper arm. The surgeon removes fat and skin from the arm to thin the arm’s profile. On occasion, drains will be used to handle fluid, but these drains are removed after a few days. Recovery typically takes 3-4 weeks, though many patients are able to return to work after just one week. During recovery, you’ll wear a special compression garment to help the arm conform to the reconstructed underlying tissue. Scarring is dependent on your physical condition and the skill of your physician. You can depend on Dr. Randall Barnett – an Ogden, UT plastic surgeon – to conceal your scars to greatest extent possible.

For more information or a free consultation to see if you qualify for brachioplasty, contact Utah’s finest plastic surgeons at Alpine Plastic Surgery.

How Do Facelifts Work?

A facelift is an effective way to compensate for the inevitable signs of aging by reducing mid-face sagging, creases below lower eyelids, fallen or displaced fat, jowls, and double-chin. However, a facelift will not change your fundamental appearance: this isn’t an extension of the witness protection program! A facelift will simply refresh your appearance and bring out your natural good looks.

What’s Up with Non-Surgical Facelifts?

In recent years, non-surgical methods have emerged, such as Thermage and Titan, which profess to refresh and lift the face. These methods work by heating the deepest skin layer to encourage increased collagen and remodel existing collagen. Do they work? It’s still too soon to say. Because they are relatively new technologies, no long-term studies have been done to verify their safety or effectiveness and there is no guarantee of noticeable improvement.

Do They Work?

One thing is certain: non-surgical methods are not really meant to have the same effect as surgical facelifts. While they may be a good option for those for whom surgery is not an option for medical reasons, they won’t be able to take off 10-15 years in a single session as a facelift is able to do.

For best results, schedule a free consultation with the Utah plastic surgery experts at Alpine Plastic Surgery. We’ll present you with all of the available options for meeting your cosmetic goals and develop a plan that meets your needs in terms of both cost and effectiveness.

Because breast augmentation is – by most counts – the third most popular cosmetic procedure in the nation, there’s a great deal of publicity surrounding the procedure. Unfortunately, with a great deal of publicity comes a great deal of misinformation. Here are three of the most common breast enhancement myths and the truth behind them:

Myth: Breast Augmentations can lead to cancer.
The truth: this myth emerged from a study performed at the University of Texas Southwestern in early 2011. They found that .0006% of women with breast implants worldwide contracted ALCL, an already extremely rare type of cancer. According to Dr. Jeffrey Kenkel, the head researcher in the study, “I think the takeaway on this is that breast implants are safe.”

Myth: Mammograms are not possible with breast implants.
The truth: mammograms are perfectly possible with breast implants and absolutely necessary whether you have implants or not. However, in some cases, a woman who’s had an augmentation needs to have additional mammogram views taken to ensure a thorough examination.

Myth: Breast implants last only ten years.
The truth: there is no concrete data on the duration of implant replacement, but your implants should have no expiration date. It is true that, for one reason or another, many women come in to see their doctors again 10-15 years after the augmentation for replacement, enlargement, or other reasons. However, in many cases, implants can last a lifetime.

Preparing for your procedure is fairly straightforward with Alpine Plastic Surgery, the Utah breast augmentation experts. Here’s what you can expect:

Call into our office and set up an appointment to meet with us.

We’ll meet for a free and confidential consultation. After performing 250-350 breast augmentations per year, we’ve encountered every question imaginable: rest assured that we’ll be able to answer yours. Together, we’ll determine the right breast size for you – for both today and the future. You can change your mind about the size you want at any point before the surgery. We’ll also discuss preoperative procedures, such as whether or not to eat or take certain medications the day before your augmentation.

We’ll take a blood sample to determine your complete blood count, blood sugar, problems with clotting and other issues. These tests determine if you’re in good condition to undergo surgery. We may ask you to have a mammogram before surgery to ensure that your breasts are healthy enough for the procedure.

Prepare your home for your recovery time prior to coming in for your breast augmentation surgery. This will make your recovery as smooth and comfortable as possible.

We always use a general anesthetic on the day of the surgery so you can simply sleep through your procedure. You’ll have an added level of assurance from knowing your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon. While anyone with a medical license can call him or herself a surgeon and perform these procedures in their offices, only a board-certified plastic surgeon is affiliated with a hospital and truly capable of performing these procedures safely and effectively. You’re in good hands.

Breast augmentation usually has a recovery time of two days. You’ll experience some pain, but will soon be ready to show the world the new beautiful you!

Through our eyes, we send thousands of unspoken signals to other people. Here are just a few of the ways that our eyes send powerful messages:

Eyebrows: Raised or Lowered? Raised eyebrows indicate submission where lowered eyebrows indicate aggression. Widened eyes and raised eyebrows in a woman’s expression stimulate a hormone in men that drives their protective instincts.

Length of Eye Contact. When you continue looking at another person even during periods of silence and look away only slowly and reluctantly, it creates the impression of intense interest. Long, intense eye contact stimulates the production of phenylethylamine, the chemical responsible for feelings of love and the “fight or flight” response.

Where on the face are you looking? The most intimidating gaze occurs when you look directly at the triangular area between a person’s eyes. By contrast, there’s a feeling of implied intimacy when you look directly into one eye or the other for prolonged periods of time.

However, there’s one eye effect you never want to create: lower lid puffiness, dark circles, and drooping upper lids can all create the impression that you are tired, angry, or sad. On the other hand, bright, alert eyes make you appear well rested, energized, and in control. One simple procedure called Blepharoplasty can remove excess fat and drooping skin and minimize the bags under the eyes to help you send the right message with everyone you meet. To learn more about Blepharoplasty or to schedule a consultation, contact the Utah plastic and cosmetic surgery experts.

There are many ways to beautify your skin. At Alpine Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of aesthetic treatments for your skin, such as microdermabrasion, which rejuvenates skin and removes blemishes and acne scars. It’s important, however, to maintain your skin between treatments while away from our office. Eating the right foods is fundamental to skin maintenance. Here are four foods that will help keep your skin looking beautiful all year long:

Eating avocados helps to prevent dry skin as well as brittle hair and nails. Avocado is a valuable source of biotin, the vitamin that assists in cell growth. And it’s not just for eating! Applying avocado to your skin topically will help tremendously in keeping your skin hydrated.

Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. They help to eliminate free radicals, the roaming cancer-causing particles that damage your skin. Tomatoes also help to prevent sunburn when combined with olive oil.

Eggs contain plenty of protein to repair your damaged skin. Eggs are also a good source of biotin, which keeps your skin moist and strong.

Walnuts are one of only a few non-fish sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, which put shine in your hair and keep your skin younger and smoother. Walnuts also help to firm your skin.

For aesthetic treatments with immediate results and to achieve your true beauty potential, contact the skin care and aesthetics professionals at Alpine Plastic Surgery.
