What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® stands for botulinum toxin A, which is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. This toxin blocks the signals in your body telling your muscles to contract. When given in high amounts, it can cause serious paralysis that may attack chest muscles and impair breathing.

However, when used for cosmetic procedures, BOTOX® is injected to certain muscles on the face to keep it from contracting.

As part of our aesthetic treatments, Alpine Plastic Surgery offers Botox in Ogden.

Why is BOTOX® injected into the face?

Mostly, BOTOX® is injected into the facial muscles to treat wrinkles, fine lines, and the following:

  • Crow’s feet, or the fine lines that appear from the corners of the eyes
  • Frown lines or forehead furrows, lines that form in the forehead when the eyebrows are raised

What other conditions can be treated by BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is not only used for cosmetic purposes to improve one’s appearance. It can also treat medical conditions that affect bodily functions. Some of these conditions include:

  • Lazy eye
  • Muscle contractures
  • Cervical dystonia
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Bladder dysfunction
  • Migraine

What are the risks brought by BOTOX®?

When administered by an experienced doctor, BOTOX® injections are generally safe. Dr. Randall Barnett at the Alpine Plastic Surgery Clinic in Salt Lake City, UT has performed BOTOX® treatments to many satisfied patients. However, certain risks are still present, especially when injections are not correctly placed. The following problems may occur:

  • Crooked smile
  • Eyelid droop
  • Dry eye or the excessive tearing of the eyes
  • Cockeyed eyebrows

There is also a possibility for the effect of BOTOX® to spread to different parts of the body, causing botulism-like effects:

  • Generalized muscle weakness
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Difficulty in swallowing or speaking
  • Vision problems
  • Uncontrolled bladder

Pregnant patients are prohibited by most doctors to undergo BOTOX® injections since the effect of the treatment on the baby are not known.

What are other contraindications for BOTOX® injections?

You need to provide your doctor with your medical history as there are matters that may interfere with the effectiveness of the procedure, which includes:

  • Bleeding problems
  • Eye conditions like glaucoma
  • Previous surgeries in the eyes
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Heart diseases
  • Seizures
  • Muscle disorders
  • Nerve disorders
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Breathing problems

How do I prepare for BOTOX® injections?

To help ensure that your desired outcomes will be met, there are certain instructions you have to follow before undergoing the treatment.

  • Avoid alcohol at least a week before the treatment.
  • Do not take anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin, and other medications that may interfere with blood clotting two weeks before treatment.
  • Tell the doctor if you have taken any sleeping aids, muscle relaxants, or any allergy medications as this may affect the treatment process.

What can I expect before the BOTOX® treatment?

Although injections are well-tolerated by most patients, some would want to omit any discomfort during the treatment. Several anesthetic options include:

  • Injections containing numbing solutions
  • Topical numbing cream that has be applied 60 to 90 minutes before the procedure
  • Blast of cold spray directed to the skin for 10 seconds

How does a BOTOX® procedure go?

A BOTOX® treatment only takes a few minutes and usually does not require anesthesia. The BOTOX® solution is injected into certain muscles with the use of a fine needle. Discomfort is very minimal in BOTOX® injections.

What can I expect after a BOTOX® injection?

Normal activities may already be resumed immediately after the procedure. The patient should only avoid rubbing or massaging the treatment areas as the toxin can spread to other areas in the body.

How long does the effects of BOTOX® last?

The effect of the treatment can be significantly noticed after 3 to 7 days and could last up to 4 to 6 months. The muscle eventually and gradually contracts, thereby bringing back the wrinkles and lines on the face. When this happens, the patient may choose to undergo another treatment. Although wrinkles may reappear again, they often look less severe than before they were treated since muscles have been trained to relax.

What side effects can I expect from BOTOX®?

As with any procedure, BOTOX® can cause several side effects, such as:

  • Temporary bruising
  • Headaches, although rare and only lasts for 24 to 48 hours
  • Eyelid drooping is a rare case and usually disappears after 3 weeks. This is caused by the spreading of BOTOX® solutions when the treatment area is rubbed.
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Infection

When any of these side effects appear, the patient is advised to report it to the physician immediately.

Dysport, like BOTOX, is a type of a botulinum toxin A injected into the skin to relax the muscles causing frown lines. Dysport injections are FDA-approved to treat facial wrinkles and cervical dystonia, or the involuntary contraction of the neck muscles. Like BOTOX, this anti-wrinkle treatment can also cause side effects that the patient should consult their physician about.

Whether you choose BOTOX or Dysport, remember that injection technique is just as important as the product itself.

ClearVein and Sclerotherapy

Varicose and spider veins are blood vessels that become enlarged and visible due to weakened valves, which cause blood to pool rather than flow to the heart.

Harmony's ClearVein treatments offer effective, non-invasive soultions that close these veins and reduce or eliminate their apperance.

Sclerotherapy treatment is done by the direct injection of a solution into the vein. The solution causes the vein to scar and eventually collapse, the pooled blood rerouting through other healthier veins. The veins that collapsed eventually fade as it is reabsorbed into the local tissue.

Both Treatments are safe and effective and provide reliable, long term results.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are treatments used to restore the youthful look of the face, giving it more volume and minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. They are often called “liquid facelifts” since its effects are similar to that of a surgical facelift procedure without the downtime.

Dermal fillers, however, do not treat excessive sagging of the skin, but they can add more volume to the shallow areas of the face. The results are immediate and the costs are much lesser than surgical procedures. However, treatment may need to be repeated to maintain the results.
